Автомобиль создан на новой корпоративной платформе Alpha, но у Camaro более 70% деталей новые. Модель стала немного короче и легче, но сохранила все узнаваемые черты. Camaro будет впервые оснащаться двухлитровым четырёхцилиндровым турбированным мотором мощностью 275 л.с., а также, V-образным шестицилиндровым двигателем мощностью 335 л.с. и, в версии SS, новым V-образным восьмицилиндровым мотором LT1 мощностью 455 л.с.
В конце июня новый Camaro был показан европейской публике на фестивале скорости в Гудвуде (англ. Goodwood Festival of Speed). Предполагаемое время начала продаж в Европе — весна-лето 2016 года.
В это же время в США был анонсирован кабриолет. Открытый автомобиль будет иметь полностью автоматически складываемый мягкий верх, который можно будет поднять или опустить в движении на скорости до 50 км/ч.
В конце октября 2015 года первые автомобили начали сходить с конвейера завода Lansing Grand River в городе Лансинг, а в середине ноября они поступили в продажу в США.
Американский автомобильный журнал Car and Driver включил новый Camaro (наряду с Ford Mustang Shelby ) в десятку лучших автомобилей 2016 модельного года, а журнал Motor Trend объявил его победителем своего конкурса Автомобиль года.
